Wacom Introduces Art Pen for Intuos3 and Cintiq 21UX

In June 2005 Wacom announced an innovative, new pen for the Intuos3 pen tablet series and Cintiq 21UX Interactive Pen Displays. The Intuos3 Art Pen is perfect for designers, artists, illustrators, calligraphers, and others who need fine, variable control of pens, brushes and other artistic tools. The patented, pressure-sensitive pen is both cordless and battery-free.

The new pen has great balance and a large grip area for enhanced comfort. The compact, conical pen stand holds the pen in either a horizontal or vertical position for easy access. The pen includes both a Standard nib and Felt nibs for different “feels”. The rich, modern, two-tone, metallic-gray finish complements both the Intuos3 pen tablets and the Cintiq 21UX.

Intuos3 Art Pen Features

1 )  X-axis (left and right)
2 ) Y-axis (up and down)
3 ) Pressure (force with which pen is applied to tablet)
4 ) Tilt (angle at which pen is tilted)
5 ) Bearing (direction in which pen is tilted)
6 ) Rotation (orientation of the pen around its own axis)

The Intuos3 Art Pen is comfortable to hold, easy to work with, and features an elliptical body shape as well as a front grip for easy rotation orientation. The pen is cordless and battery-free for reliable and consistent operation. The tip features 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity for precise width control, variable opacity and adjustable color effects. The attractive, compact pen stand holds the pen in a horizontal or vertical orientation and is a useful addition to any workspace.

The Intuos3 Art Pen includes two types of tips: Standard and Felt nibs. The Standard nib is made of the same material as that used in Wacom’s Intuos and Graphire pens. The new Felt nib increases the friction between the pen tip and the tablet surface resulting in more of a “pencil or marker on paper” feel.

How the Intuos3 Art Pen Works

Dual coils near the pen's tip allow the tablet to determine the angle of rotation of the pen. This unprecedented pen tracking capability combined with a new chisel-shaped nib allows the artist, illustrator and designer to work with tools that emulate brushes, markers, and calligraphic pens like never before. Just by rotating the pen, a drawn line becomes narrow or broad.Combined with a software application that supports its features, a Intuos3 Art Pen can produce almost any type of brush effect or marker stroke. Professional and novice calligraphers will appreciate the responsiveness of the pen and the smooth, graceful lines it produces with just a shift of the wrist and a twist of the pen. Designers and illustrators will enjoy the freedom to create new tools that produce digital effects never seen before in graphic applications. The Intuos3 Art Pen adds a whole new dimension to digital imaging.

Exclusive Tablet Control Panel

Wacom’s exclusive tablet control panel for the PC and preference pane for the Mac allows customization of all aspects of the Intuos3 Art pen, mouse, and tablet features. The control panel has been designed and streamlined to optimize the way Wacom customers typically work. Wacom’s engineers analyzed hundreds of preference files submitted by Intuos users to identify the most commonly used features. The control panel provides application- and tool-specific settings for the pressure-sensitivity of the tip and eraser, programming of the Touch Strip, ExpressKeys, DuoSwitch buttons, and customizing the many other features of the interactive pen display or pen tablet.

Software Partner Support

The Intuos3 Art Pen was developed with the cooperation of many industry-leading software suppliers including Adobe® and Corel®. Adobe built features around the Intuos3 Art Pen into its latest versions of Photoshop and Illustrator. Along with the new “Live Paint” feature in Illustrator CS2, the Intuos3 Art Pen takes the drawing experience to a whole new level.

Rotation Setting for Calligraphic and Scatter Brushes

Adobe has added a new rotation setting to Photoshop CS2 that can be used with the Intuos3 Art Pen to control size, opacity, angle, flow, color dynamics and the amount of scattering of virtually any brush.

Photoshop CS2 Rotation Brush Setting

Corel worked closely with Wacom throughout the development of the Art Pen technology to integrate the new capabilities into the Painter brush engine. They also created the Painter Art Pen Brush Pack, a collection of 5 new brushes that takes advantage of the new features of the pen to greatly enhance the digital art experience and heighten the relationship between the designer and digital canvas.
