1 What is a Tablet?

1 A tablet is a type of pointing device, just like a mouse. It comes with an electronic pen (a pen-shaped mouse) that operates only on top of the tablet (a special mouse pad). Since the pen is cordless and battery-free, computer operation can be carried out freely and intuitively.

To see basic features, check to see "Tablet Basics".

2 What can you do with a Tablet?

2 Not only for creating illustrations and web graphics/banners, with a tablet you can edit digital photos, write handwritten emails, create animations, and even write directly onto business documents (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/PDF etc.) as well.

3 Can you draw illustrations with just a Tablet?

3 In addition to a Tablet, you must have a drawing software or a photo editing software. Both Intuos* and Graphire series come with powerful drawing and photo editing software to help you start your creativity from day 1.

For software information, see "Goodies: Software Entertainment ".

4 What is the difference between a Tablet and an ordinary mouse?

4 Wacom Tablets are cordless, ball-free and battery-free, so no worries of cleaning your pen, and no frustration of that unwanted cord ! Also, while a mouse operates using relative coordinates, a Tablet operates using absolute coordinates, making PC operation more intuitive. For example, with absolute coordinates, when you place your pen on the bottom left corner of the tablet surface, the cursor on the screen will move to the bottom left corner of the computer screen. No matter where the cursor is on the screen, once the pen is moved to the bottom left corner of the tablet, the cursor on the screen will move directly to the same place.

To see basic features, check to see "Tablet Basics".

5 Can a Tablet be used together with a normal mouse?

5 Whether it's a mouse that come with your PC or another input device such as a trackball, Wacom Tablets can be used together anytime.

6 Why do you have different Tablet sizes? What's the difference?

6 Whether the size is big or small, functions and performance are the same. What's different, is the feel of the operationality.
The Tablet's active area corresponds 1 to 1 to the monitor screen. So, when the Tablet size is small, the cursor movement on the screen compared to the length of the movement of the pen, will be much longer and requires getting used to difference. To the contrary, the more larger the Tablet size is, the less difference in the movement of the pen the movement of the cursor on the screen, resulting in a realistically natural feel of operation on the computer. This is why many professional graphic artists prefer the larger size Tablets for their artwork.
With a small Tablet, the cursor can be moved just with the wrist movement. On the other hand, with a large Tablet, the cursor is controlled with the arm movment.

7 What can I do with a Tablet?

7 Besides being a replacement of a mouse, Tablets can be used in various ways. Here are a few examples.

*Photo Editing
Tablets can help you easily edit and correct digital/scanned photos.
* Erase the date printed on your favorite photo, and make a greeting card out of it.
* Partially brighten your child’s photo, so the beautiful background appears as it really was.
* Have fun combining photos and enhance your creativity

All of the above can be done easily with a Tablet, while with a mouse, it would take time and add frustration to the whole process.

*Handwritten Emails
By using “PenPlus Personal” (Graphire3,4 bundled software), just like sending letters and facsimiles, now emails can be written freely by hand, adding an original touch to your ordinary emails.

8 How does Wacom Tablets Work?

8

Wacom Tablets take advantage of the electro-magnetic resonance technology developed by Wacom Co. Ltd. in which radio waves are sent to the stylus and returned for position analysis.
Thus you can even put a sheet of paper or photograph on the tablet surface and trace the drawing or photo on it , getting a digital image of the original drawing or photo easily . For a detailed description of the unique, patented Wacom technology please refer to our White Papers. (http://www.wacom.com.sg/download/driver/Tech_Intuos.pdf)

9 Where can I find handwriting recognition software?

9

There are various kinds of handwriting recognition software for Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, etc. available in the market . As for the recommended software title and its availability, please ask your local distributor for details . Usually they could recommend you specific software that is locally available. For further information and purchase details, please check the software vendor's web site.

For Windows users , Paragraph PenOffice or and Paragraph Calligrapher, is available. Both software support most common European languages.

Mac OS 10.2 or higher has a handwriting recognition software called Inkwell, which is already part of the operating system.

Microsoft Office XP also has a built-in handwriting recognition. If it is not installed by default, you should use add/remove to install this function. 10 How do I know whether other software supports Wacom tablets or not?

10 Wacom tablets work in ALL application software in a way like a mouse (in mouse mode, relative coordination mode). With the tablet driver installed, Wacom tablets work in absolute coordination mode. Other tablet functions, such as the eraser, tilt and tool ID functions , require built-in full support by the application software used. In other words, the pen only reacts to pressure in software that supports pressure sensitivity. For detail please check the Technical FAQ 622.

11 What is "Absolute Positioning"?

11 Traditional input devices like a standard PC mouse offer only relative positioning: When the mouse reaches the edge of the mouse pad, the on-screen cursor needn't be at the edge of your monitor screen as well. But Wacom tablets operate with absolute positioning: The entire active area of your tablet represents the entire monitor screen - place the pen in the lower left-hand corner of your tablet and the on-screen pointer will move to the lower left-hand corner of your monitor. Wacom tablets, however, offers relative positioning as well. Also, because of a very low frequency electromagnetic field under the active area of the tablet the pen doesn't need to be dragged like a mouse but hovers over the tablet surface. This means, the moment you touch the active area with your pen tip you're already performing a left mouse click.

12 What is "Active Area"?

12 The Active Area is the drawing area of the tablet where your Intuos/Graphire tools are detected. For example, if you have an Intuos3 A4 tablet, the active area is A4 size. For Graphire4 the active area is A6 for CTE-440 or A5 for CTE-640.

13

What is "Pen Pressure"?

13 This feature of the Wacom Pens and eraser senses the amount of pressure being applied. This is used to create natural-looking pen, brush, and eraser strokes in applications that support pressure-sensitivity. Even more, with 512 pressure levels in a Graphire and 1,024 pressure levels in an Intuos, you can precisely control opacity, color, exposure, or line width while creating smooth curves and gradual transitions. Different applications take advantage of pressure sensitivity in many ways, depending on the application's capabilities.

14 What is "Eraser"?

14 Most Wacom input devices have an eraser attached at the back end. Depending on the setting in the Wacom Control Panel and the utilized application, you can erase the same way as you would do it with a pencil eraser head - and it's even pressure sensitive. Different applications take advantage of the eraser in many ways, depending on the application's capabilities.

15 What is "Tool Buttons"?

15

All buttons and switches of any Wacom pen or mouse can be configured individually with your favorite short cuts. This special feature allows for individual programming of really any task, command or shortcut in any computer software. This way you can speed up any application by having your most frequently used commands or shortcut virtually at your fingertips.

16 What is "Tool-ID"?

16 Tool ID is an intelligent system that allows additional Intuos input devices to be personalized to the software of your choice. Every Intuos input device has a unique electronic identification so even multiple users can each have their own tools personalized to work the way they prefer on a shared system. If you are working with two identical pens, the tablet will recognize each one as a separate tool. This is particularly useful if you have customized each pen differently. In applications, which support the Tool-ID, the brush or pen will change automatically just by changing the input device. This feature is not available in Graphire and Cintiq/PL series.

17 What is "Application-specific settings"?

17 Wacom tools and tablet settings that have been customized for individual applications. The control panel enables you to program a tool to behave uniquely in different applications. Your application-specific settings are in effect whenever you use the application, because the driver detects the active application automatically. Also see "Tool buttons". 18 If I bought a Wacom tablet set in Japan and later find the bundle software is a Japanese version, can I exchange it for an English version?

18

This question is asked by some English speaking foreigners now stay in Japan. We don't have such program providing English bundle software for the tablet package sold within Japan. In fact, even the titles of the bundle software are different for the Japanese domestic tablet package and the Asia Pacific tablet package.

The tablet driver provided in the domestic Japanese tablet package is multilingual. When you install the tablet driver into an English OS (Windows or Macintosh), the installer will automatically select the proper language to install.

29

Pen nibs are designed for long-lasting use, but will eventually wear out. The rate at which they wear out will depend on the amount of use, type of nib,and tablet surface. The more friction that is created between the pen nib and surface, the faster the nib will wear. Replacement nibs are available from our Wacom Authorized Online Stores. 2 What's the difference between an LCD Tablet and a Touch Screen?

2 With an LCD Tablet, computer operation is carried out by a Pen as a substitute for a mouse, instead of touching the screen with your finger. Compared to a Touch Screen, operating with a Pen makes using a detailed user interface software much more easier. Even if the buttons are small and the user interface is complicated, with a Pen you will not need to worry about pressing two buttons next to each other at the same time, or pressing another button with you palm by accident. Also, Pen input as a result, makes the LCD last longer, and since the sensor board is placed beneath the LCD, it makes the screen much brighter and easier to look at.
